What is a Microsoft LMS? Part II

Microsoft is well known in the corporate world for revolutionizing the way we do business. Who doesn’t have Microsoft Office Suite, right?

It’s a universal mainstay.

And, because of its immense popularity, the skills employees have working on the software are immediately transferable to new jobs and companies. It’s as if they speak the same language as everyone else!

1) There are lots of companies using Microsoft because of its cutting edge technology that helps them operate more efficiently and,

2) Employees actively use the product in their daily work lives.

Microsoft essentially has their hand in all aspects of your business, including learning.

This begs the question – is there a Microsoft LMS?

Well, the short answer is ‘not really.’

Naturally, one would assume Microsoft already has some type of LMS, but this is simply not the case.

Over 10 years ago, Microsoft created a free tool for very basic learning management called SharePoint Learning Kit (SLK). However, this was never intended to be a full blown learning management system and was very limited in scope.

In a nutshell, the SharePoint Learning Kit is a SCORM 2004 certified e-learning delivery and tracking application built as a SharePoint solution (SharePoint 2007 and 2010). It has the following core features:

• Supports SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, and Class Server Content.
• Supports learner centric and instructor led workflows
• Allows assignments, tracking and grading of both e-learning and non-e-learning content.

When it comes to eLearning, this solution was specifically intended for the education sector, not for corporate needs. This is a problem because it can’t handle more complex workflows, strict compliance requirements and reporting to name a few.

SharePoint Learning Kit was maintained by developers for a short period of time, but currently it is not actively being developed.

So what this means is that if you have SharePoint Learning Kit, it will only work on the following – SharePoint on premise 2007, 2010 and 2013. It has been untested on 2016, but there is a small possibility it may work. SharePoint Learning Kit will not work with Office 365 and never will be as it is written in full-trust code.

Microsoft LMS alternatives

In 2017, Microsoft introduced a set of educational products and services, inspired by teachers and students.

The new tools work with Office 365 and include Microsoft Teams, Class Notebook, Office Apps, Education Apps and files built into every class.

While Microsoft Education is great for the educational sector, much like SharePoint Learning Kit, it simply is not a solution for the corporate world.

So, what other options are there if you want to continue using Microsoft products for learning?

There are several training options available by third party solutions that work with Microsoft.

For instance, ShareKnowledge is a Microsoft-friendly solution that seamlessly integrates with your entire business ecosystem. This works particularly well for corporate training needs. And, when your employees are already using Microsoft in their daily work lives it only makes it that much easier to get them to use the LMS — because they’re already there!

ShareKnowledge is also a proud silver award recipient of the Brandon Hall Award for Best Advance in Learning Management Technology for Compliance Training.

Other options might suffice, but here are a few things to consider:

  • Is the LMS built on top of SharePoint or just integrated with it?

ShareKnowledge is built on top of your SharePoint and Microsoft environment – and because of that it automatically receives all of your existing authentication protocols etc. The problem that can be an issue with other systems is with integration. It doesn’t always work in a unified way and as a result you could be faced with the LMS not being able to ‘talk’ to all your business systems.
  • Do you need a system built for a corporate or educational environment?

Just like with Microsoft’s new educational product, some LMSs are not built specifically for corporate needs. This is a big differentiator that must be considered. ShareKnowledge has done extensive research on the needs of business and have designed its features accordingly.

  • Simple or complex business needs?

Not every business has complex training needs and so basic features might be a satisfactory option. Other LMS options that use Microsoft SharePoint often times only cater to very small groups with limited needs. This will be a problem if you need to scale down the road. If you have multiple organizational units and very complex needs that require customization, then these simple apps will not suffice and you’ll need a system like ShareKnowledge to handle this.

It’s simple. Sharing knowledge is easy, efficient and effective using Microsoft technologies you already have and your employees use and love!
